OVERVIEW

WHAT THE TANK & ICV SIMULATOR DOES

VR Astra builds virtual-reality training simulators for Infantry Combat Vehicles (ICVs) such as the BMP-2 and for main battle tanks. Trainees sit in a physical crew station with vehicle-specific mapped controls while the VR headset places them in the driving or gunnery environment — desert, plains, mountains, snow, forest and water crossings, by day or night, in any weather.

The simulator moves familiarisation, procedural learning and repetitive practice off the live vehicle. Every early attempt on a real ICV or tank consumes fuel, track hours, maintenance and instructor supervision; on the simulator, a mistake costs nothing but a reset. Trainees then progress to the real platform with familiarity and confidence, and live-vehicle hours are preserved for advanced training.

We have already designed and deployed a BMP-2 driver training simulator and a BMP-2 IMS / gunnery familiarisation system. The same architecture extends to other ICVs, MBTs and Army-specified armoured platforms.

CAPABILITIES

TRAINING CAPABILITIES

Driver training

  • Starting, stopping, steering, gear management and braking
  • Reversing, turning and confined-area manoeuvring
  • Gradients, uneven terrain, obstacles and water crossings
  • Night, rain, fog and dust driving with reduced visual references

Gunnery & weapon-system familiarisation

  • Vehicle weapon-system interfaces and sight picture
  • Control and switch interaction in the correct sequence
  • Target recognition and range-related interface familiarisation
  • Instructor-defined engagement exercises with scoring

Crew & formation training

  • Driver, commander and crew stations sharing one vehicle state
  • Multiple crews in one environment — e.g. three tanks and two ICVs
  • Formation spacing, route adherence, halts and formation changes
  • Communication, timing and role discipline

Maintenance & fault diagnosis

  • Interactive pre-operation inspection: engine, fluids, cooling, tracks, electrics
  • Controlled faults — engine, electrical, brakes/steering, tracks
  • Locate → inspect → diagnose → perform procedure → verify
  • Army-approved procedures govern every exercise

Best for: Familiarisation, basic driving, procedures, crew practice, maintenance and assessment.

3DOF motion

Pitch, roll and yaw motion platform.

Best for: Gradients, turning, braking, uneven terrain and vehicle handling.

6DOF motion

Surge, sway, heave, roll, pitch and yaw.

Best for: Advanced terrain, severe gradients, difficult manoeuvring and advanced crew exercises.

Familiarisation2–4 hControls, crew layout, systems and basic operation.
Vehicle handling4–6 hManoeuvring, reversing, gradients and obstacles.
Environment4–6 hNight, rain, fog, dust and difficult terrain.
Crew & formation4–8 hCrew coordination, multi-vehicle formation and scenario changes.
Assessment2–4 hStandard assessment, remediation and reassessment.

Indicative exposure only. Progression is governed by Army-defined competency thresholds, followed by supervised validation on the live vehicle.

ASSESSMENT ENGINE

EVERY SESSION IS MEASURED

  • Steering accuracy, braking, acceleration and gear management
  • Route adherence, formation spacing and speed discipline
  • Collisions, near misses and obstacle response
  • Procedure sequence, missed steps and fault identification
  • Reaction and completion time, attempt history and cohort reports

The instructor station creates, assigns and monitors each exercise, injects events and faults in real time, and reviews every attempt. Patterns across attempts show exactly which skill needs remedial training — so trainees repeat the weak skill, not the whole syllabus.

Your doctrine stays yours. Syllabus, procedures, scenarios and assessment criteria are defined by your instructors and SMEs; VR Astra turns them into repeatable, measurable simulation.

FAQ

TANK & ICV SIMULATOR — QUESTIONS

Does VR Astra make a BMP-2 simulator?

Yes. VR Astra has designed and deployed a BMP-2 driver training simulator for platform handling and terrain familiarisation, and a BMP-2 IMS / gunnery familiarisation system for weapon-system workflow and controlled engagement exercises. Both run on the same instructor-controlled platform with assessment and reporting.

Can the simulator be configured for other ICVs and tanks?

Yes. The digital vehicle — dimensions, weight, power, steering, braking, gears, suspension, instrumentation and crew layout — is configured around the Army-specified platform. ICVs, MBTs and other armoured vehicles can be added to the same system.

Is it a full-motion tank simulator?

You choose. The simulator is available as a static station, a 3DOF (pitch, roll, yaw) platform or a 6DOF (surge, sway, heave, roll, pitch, yaw) platform, matched to the training task and budget.

Does it replace training on the real vehicle?

No. It moves familiarisation and repetitive practice to simulation first so trainees arrive at the live vehicle with greater familiarity. Live-vehicle hours are preserved for advanced training and final validation.

How long does it take to build a new armoured-vehicle module?

For clearly defined modules on the existing VR Astra simulation framework, an initial deployable version can be delivered in as little as 2–3 weeks. High-fidelity platforms, custom hardware, motion systems and extensive terrain recreation have project-specific timelines.

Is the simulator indigenous?

Yes. VR Astra by Aveera (Aveera Infotech Pvt. Ltd.) is an Indian company. The software, scenarios and instructor tools are developed in India and co-developed with Army subject-matter experts.
